How it works
Isokenkäisten Klubi, a family-run lodge and restaurant on Lake Heikinjärvi (about a 40-minute drive from Kuusamo and Ruka), publishes smoke sauna evenings open to individual visitors throughout the year, mixed for women and men, with dates in the booking calendar and advance booking required. The sauna is heated slowly with dry birch logs from the owners' forest, holds up to 15 guests and sits near the main building; the sauna master prepares the sauna and the birch whisks. The experience includes whisks, peat masks and a swim in the lake: from the pier and terrace in summer and autumn, through a hole in the ice in winter. Guests are asked to bring a swimsuit because the sauna is mixed. The sauna is licensed for alcohol. The operator says it holds the Authentic Finnish Sauna Experience certificate from the Sauna from Finland association. Groups can also book the sauna privately.
